Driveway Fabric – If you want a driveway that will stay firm and well-drained under the weight of cars, driveway fabric is what you need. Road-building professionals use it extensively. You can use it under your gravel driveway too so that moisture isn’t continually pushing up fine materials brought in by car tires.
What Is Driveway Fabric?
Being a geotextile fabric it acts as a separation between the soil the aggregate surface and serves to let water drain through and thus prolong the life of your driveway. It’ll prevent sinking and collapse and is a vital aid to modern ways of reinforcing the ground.
How Driveway Fabric Works Under Gravel
The whole idea behind the fabric is to prevent creep and sinking, especially as loads proceed to cross the surface. The geotextile is robust enough to accept the vehicular pressures and distribute the loads in its being a non-woven product. It will also help with the overall surface drainage performance; being a filtering product, it will thus let the moisture pass through but not find room for the more solid products of the soil thereupon.Driveway Geotextile fabric is suitable for many of the same engineering applications as drive over ground support membrane products, with many of the same functions. In fact, driveway fabric provides the following functions:
Soil Seperation: Prevents the mixing of soil and gravel so as to keep the driveway base free of, and clean from, soil inclusions that may result in undesirable increase in maintenance effort over time.
Load Distribution: Keeps the wearing surface, on the whole, relatively level in appearance. Driveway fabric achieves this by spreading the pressure imposed on the aggregate by vehicle wheels on a wider base, thus inhibiting sinking or ‘road rash’.
Filtration and Drainage: Invites drainage through its porous nature while preventing the filtration of fine soil particles to the wearing surface.
Reinforcement Support: Increases the tensile strength of weak soil which would present difficulties for other road structural materials; accordingly it improves ground bearing pressure during loading and is applied in soft soil surfacing.
The materials best suited to this type of application are as follows:
Polypropylene (PP) Geotextile. This is lightweight and usefully inexpensive while remaining suitably durable and resistant to chemicals and other materials as well.
Polyester (PET) Geotextile as shown here has greater tensile strength and is more suited to heavy load conditions, but is more expensive and yet also genuinely recommended for the long term in terms of its function.
Another choice would be non-woven geotextile, and is best known for its filtration performance, being a synthetic value [AC] product made by needle-punching or needle-punching
Woven Geotextile
Takes fabric strength strength with regard to tensile performance. Suitable for high load road bases but low permeability for drainage compared to unbonded types.ORG
Permeability and Drainage Performance
Permeability is a major factor in the choice you make for your driveway fabric. It controls how quickly water moves through your driveway fabric.
Good permeability reduces the amount of water that accumulates under the gravel reducing the risk of softening of the soil base and therefore, its tendency to deform under concentrated traffic loads causing surface wear and damage.ORG
Filtration performance is important too, blocking soil whilst allowing just the right amount of water flow at a rate that translates into long-term structural stability.ORG
Tensile Strength & CBR Puncture resistance
How much hard- pressure is required to puncture this driveway fabric. Tensile strength tells how much of this force the fabric will take until it tears.ORG
CBR puncture strength measures the ability to resist sharp pressure and is used as a benchmark test to simulate the impact of gravel and stone traffic.ORG
Driveway fabric is subjected to almost continuous loading from traffic moving across the gravel.ORG
UV Resistance & Outdoor Durability
Often the driveway fabric is exposed to the sunlight outside the garage (time of wedding steadily increase of time the driveway fabric is left uncovered). Regular brands of geotextile fabric contain UV-stabilized fibres that improve the ultimate lifespan of the product after installation (though not leaving them out in sunlight too long is best of course).ORG
Once covered, the exposure is significantly reduced, especially at points where the fabric overlaps making performance kind of level out over time.ORG
Install Method for Driveway Fabric
Of course, installation of your driveway fabric is critical. You have to get it right!ORG
Inadequate installation negates the purpose of this transformational material.ORG
First thing to do is to really sort out that ground surface, leveling it properly, and you want to remove sharp stones, and debris too.ORG
In a second step, run the driveway fabric out adequately overlapping the seams for maximum efficiencies covering and saturating the whole ground surface.ORG
Then again, the gravel is put on top, and again, there is no point in allowing any part of your driveway fabric to be left uncovered.ORG
Proper compaction of the fabric will help ensure it performs correctly.ORG
Use Groups of Driveway Fabric
What nifty long term benefits accrue from using driveway fabric.ORG
Ground stability, especially of course, load carrying capability, that reduces gravel loss and surface sinking, decreasing maintenance etc.
